Description
No. 36 King Street is a terrace house built between 1715 and 1716, with the front rebuilt around 1750 to 1751. The building is constructed of stock brick and has a concealed roof. It stands four storeys high and is three windows wide. The ground floor has been altered with a mid to late 20th-century shop front, featuring a plain 19th-century doorway set in a stucco surround to the right, accessed by steps. The upper floors have recessed sash windows beneath flat gauged red brick arches, with later casements in the attic storey. There is a stone sill band on the first floor and a bracketed stone cornice above the second floor, along with a rebuilt parapet topped with stone coping.
The back elevation is largely original and dates from the early 18th century, featuring a closet wing with flush framed sashes under flat red brick arches and red brick strings between the storeys. Inside, above the ground floor, the building retains original and mid-18th-century features, including panelling in the rear first floor and second floor rooms. The front first floor room has a mid-18th-century enriched plaster cornice. The staircase, which has probably been altered, features plain balusters, turned newel posts, and a heavy swept handrail.
