Description

No. 8 King Street is an early 19th-century terrace house that incorporates the northern gateway to St. Paul’s Churchyard. The gateway itself dates to circa 1730, with the wrought iron gate dating from 1714-15. The house has a stock brick facade and a slate roof. It is arranged over four storeys with dormered mansard roof. The facade is three windows wide. A mid-20th century shop front is located to the right, and to the left is a circa 1730 blocked architrave and corniced gateway to the churchyard, featuring a good wrought iron gate from 1714-15. The upper floors have recessed sash windows, each set within a gauged flat arch. A parapet with coping sits atop the building. The building is listed primarily due to its connection with the entrance to St. Paul’s Churchyard. A wall-mounted, 18-inch Windsor gas lantern is present on the rear elevation, suspended from a wrought iron bracket above the entrance to St Paul's Churchyard.
