Description
Nos. 21-28 form a terrace of houses on the west side of Dorset Square, constructed around 1815 to 1820 as part of the Portman Estate development. The houses are built of stock brick with channelled stucco to the ground floors, and have concealed slate roofs. They are arranged over four storeys with a basement. Each house has a three-window front.
The doorways are semicircular and arched, progressing from the right to the centre of the terrace, then to the left, with panelled doors set within jambs of Greek Doric columns supporting a Greek key enriched head surround. Fanlights are present above the doors. The upper floors feature recessed sash windows, each set within a flat, gauged arch. A plat band sits above the ground floor, culminating in a stucco cornice and blocking course. The first floor has cast iron balconies featuring a geometric-anthemion pattern. Area railings are topped with urn finials.
No. 26-28 was once the home of George Grossmith, a fact commemorated by a Greater London Council plaque.
