Description
No 222 Marylebone Road is a hotel built between 1897 and 1899, designed by Colonel R W Edis. The building is constructed of red brick with terracotta dressings and features a slated mansard roof. It has eight storeys plus a basement and consists of 14 main bays arranged in a symmetrical composition. The central three bays project slightly and reach full height, featuring an arched entrance on the ground floor set within a pilastered surround. The outer three bays on either side are advanced to the ground floor and include arched loggias above which are balustraded balconies.
Canted bay windows rise to full height above the second floor in the first and third bays on either side, topped with Dutch gables. The central bay has similar windows on the ground and first floors, linked with round heads. The second floor has segmental windows, while most other windows are square-headed with terracotta architraves. The upper lights have sash glazing bars. A square central clock tower features domed pinnacles at the corners and openwork finials on the roof. The hotel retains several elaborate interiors, including the ground staircase, entrance hall, and dining rooms.
