Description
Walmer House is a former public house built in 1873. It features cream stock brick with stone dressings and a slate roof, displaying a freely handled Italianate style. The building stands three storeys high with a dormered mansard roof and is two windows wide, with a splayed corner and a two-window return.
On the ground floor, there are two windows flanking a doorway that is set in segmental arcading, which is stilted above pilasters adorned with foliate caps. These pilasters also support ornamental spandrels, a fascia, and an enriched cornice. The narrow entrance to the corner splay is similarly detailed, as are the ground floor windows of the return.
The upper floors feature recessed sashes within enriched stone surrounds and heads. A continuous deep band course at the second floor level includes a carved name panel inscribed "Walmer Castle" on the splayed corner. The building is topped with a bracketed crowning cornice and a blocking course, with a chimney stack positioned over the corner splay, its base inscribed with the date.
