Description
St Marylebone Grammar School is a school building constructed around 1856, with 20th-century additions, designed by W G and E Haberson. The structure is made of red brick featuring blue brick diaper work and ashlar dressings, topped with tile and lead roofs, and is designed in the Gothic Revival style.
To the east, there is a polygonal two-storey library range, while to the west, there is a three-storey range with a half basement, turret, and an attached porch. The library range includes pointed three-light traceried windows set between buttresses, and it originally had an open arcade below, which is now closed. The building features an embattled parapet and a steeply-pitched roof topped with a lantern.
The west range has a flight of steps leading to the porch, which contains a pointed doorway with the inscription 'Philological School AD 1792' above it. This asymmetrical range has two gables and a two-storey bay with a mullioned transom window on the left side. The remaining windows are two-light pointed mullion and transom windows with trefoils in their heads. There are string courses at the floor levels, and the turret includes a belfry with ogee lights and a spirelet with lucarnes. The library features stained glass.
Inside, the headmaster's study has panelled walls and a ceiling, and there is a staircase with a wrought iron handrail.
