Description
Christ Church is a former church built between 1824 and 1825 by architect Philip Hardwick, with additions and alterations made in 1887 by Sir A W Blomfield. The building features a brick nave with ashlar dressings, an ashlar portico, and a tower, all designed in a classical style. The church has a reversed orientation, with an 8-bay nave and chancel that includes a single bay projection. The east side has a portico topped by a tower, featuring an Ionic tetrastyle portico with a pediment and a balustraded parapet, flanked by pedimented windows. The portico returns are supported by paired Ionic columns. The tower is three stages high, with a square Ionic peristyle surrounding a cylindrical core that rises into an octagonal cupola adorned with volutes. The body of the church has round-headed windows set in architraves with a continuous sill band and a balustraded parapet, while an oculus is present in the gable of the single-bay projection.
Inside, there is an 8-bay Corinthian arcade, with clerestory windows positioned above an entablature that cuts into the low arched ceiling, which features ribs and oval panels. There are galleries and Corinthian pilasters on the east wall. The church was redundant at the time of the resurvey, and the interior was not inspected.
