Description

Manor House is a block of flats constructed in 1907 in an eclectic Arts and Crafts style by the architects Gordon and Gunton. The building is ashlar-faced at the front and sides, with brick to the rear, and has slate or tile roofs. It is six storeys high with a basement. The design features a balanced composition with a slightly projecting central range containing two full-height canted bays, and four-bay wings. A full-height canted bay projects to the west, while a polygonal angle turret is situated to the east. Porches in the centre of the wings are distinguished by Ionic pilasters and keyed round arches. A first-floor balcony is partly balustraded. The windows are mullion and transom style, with the mullions flush with the wall. The wings feature very shallow bows on the first and second floors. A round-arched loggia with rusticated archivolts is present on the fifth floor of the wings. A modillion cornice tops the building. Dormers punctuate the roof, and the outer bay to the left has a pyramidal roof with flanking turrets. An open-pedimented composition adorns the central range, incorporating a round-arched recess with an oculus. The angle turret to the right is topped by an attic with a scalloped parapet. Original area railings are present.
