Description

No 22 Buckingham Street is a corner house and office built around 1860 by architect R P Pullan. The building is constructed of stock brick, with stucco and red brick dressings, and features a slate roof. It showcases Italian medieval details in a High Victorian style. The structure has four storeys and a basement, with three major bays on both street fronts.

The ground floor is finished in stucco and includes a prominent gabled porch supported by shafts with capitals adorned with lush foliage, positioned off-center to the right. The windows exhibit varied designs, featuring segmental arched recessed sashes on the ground floor, while the upper floors have semi-circular arched windows highlighted by bright red brick dressings. There are three such windows on the first floor, six closely set on the second floor as if forming an arcade, and three pairs on the third floor. These windows are framed by pilasters with foliate caps, and the second-floor windows have bracketed projecting sills.

The building also features band courses between the storeys and a polychrome tile frieze situated between the brackets of the projecting eaves cornice. It shares identical architectural features with buildings on John Adam Street. Historically, No 22 was used as an office by William Surges, who was Pullan's brother-in-law.
