Description
No. 9 Buckingham Street is a terraced town house built around 1677, with later alterations, and is part of Barbon's development of the York House estate. The building features a stucco-faced brick exterior and has a concealed roof. It stands four storeys high, with the top floor being an early 19th-century addition, and includes a basement. The façade is three windows wide, with a narrow blind window to the left on the ground floor, first, and second floors. The doorway is located to the right and has a panelled door set back in a wood architrave, which is adorned with finely carved console-brackets supporting a cornice-hood. The first and second floors have nearly flush framed glazing bar sash windows with keyblocks above their arches. There are plain plat bands over the ground, first, and second floors, and a plain parapet coping at the attic storey. The property is enclosed by wrought iron area railings topped with pommelled vase finials.
The interior has undergone considerable alterations but still retains some original features, including elements of panelling and cornices. There is an arched opening from the passage-hall to a dog leg staircase, with the top two flights featuring closed moulded strings and substantial oak spiral balusters, along with square newels that have turned pendants, similar to the staircase in No. 12.
