Description

A terrace of houses at 1-5 Stanhope Place, London, dating from around 1840-45, likely designed by George Ledwell Taylor. The buildings are constructed of stucco with a slate roof and exhibit restrained late Greek detailing. They are four storeys high, including an attic, with basements beneath. Each front of the terrace is two windows wide, with number 5 projecting forward in a segmental bow. Each house has a projecting Greek Doric portico-porch to the left of the front door. The windows are recessed glazing bar sashes, with cornices over those on the first floor. A continuous main entablature runs along the second floor. A continuous cast iron balcony extends across the first floor, and cast iron spearhead area railings are present. Originally part of Tyburnia, a development on the Bishop of London's Estate first planned by S.P. Cockerell and subsequently laid out to a modified plan by George Gutch, the terrace forms part of a wider historical context.
