Description
No. 55 Curzon Street is a terrace house dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with some alterations. It features darkened brick and a stuccoed ground floor, topped with a slate roof. The building stands four storeys high, including a basement and a dormered mansard, and is two windows wide. The doorway is located to the left and has a semicircular arch with pilastered jambs and a fanlight; the ground floor windows have been altered. The upper floors contain recessed glazing bar sash windows set beneath flat gauged brick arches. A stucco plat band runs along the first floor, with a stucco cornice at the parapet topped with coping. There are cast iron balconettes on the first floor and cast iron railings in the area.
Inside, the house features a staircase from around 1800, which has carved tread ends, square balusters, and a dado. The ground floor rooms retain their cornices, moulded friezes, and alcoves flanking the chimney breast, with the rear room having a bow end. The first floor was completely refurbished around 1900 in Rococo style, with walls, doors, and ceilings featuring a coved cornice decorated with raised borders, shaped panels adorned with flowers, fruit, ribbons, and musical trophies of varied designs, along with a cast iron chimney piece from the same period.
