Description
The Porter's Lodge in front of Number 1 Stratford Place is a former porter's lodge built in 1774 by Richard Edwin. It is constructed from yellow stock brick with stone dressings and is one storey high, featuring a square plan with one bay. The west side has a semicircular arched doorway, while the flanks have blind semicircular arched windows. The lodge has a stone plinth, a stone plat band above the doorway, and a cornice with a blocking course that is topped by a sculpted stone lion in a couchant position. Above the doorway, there is a stone roundel inscribed with the words "Stratford Place" in incised serif lettering. Additionally, there is a plaque facing Oxford Street, carved in shallow relief, depicting an urn flanked by gryphons. Originally, there was a matching lodge on the opposite side, with gates situated between the two.
