Description
The Citizens of Battersea War Memorial Shelter is a Second World War memorial dedicated to all war casualties from Battersea, designed as a sheltered seating area. It is constructed from red brick with limestone dressings and features a clay tile roof.
The structure has a crescent shape, with its convex outer face facing north and a hipped roof. There is a small central store room accessible through a door on the north side. At each end, the shelter is extended by a timber pergola supported by brick columns.
The exterior is open-fronted to the south, where the roof and stone architrave are held up by a brick colonnade. A copper-clad lantern with a weather vane crowns the roof. The north wall includes small unglazed openings adorned with black decorative metal grilles.
Inside, a replacement granite plaque is centrally placed, inscribed with the words: "TO THE MEMORY / OF THE / MEN, WOMEN / AND / CHILDREN / OF / BATTERSEA / WHO LOST THEIR LIVES / IN THE / WORLD WAR / 1939-1945." Timber bench seating is built against the back wall on either side of the plaque.
