Description

Dovedale Cottages is an almshouse built in 1841, funded by Mrs. Lightfoot and her daughter, Mary, for individuals in reduced circumstances who profess godliness. The building is constructed of white brick in Flemish bond with cement dressings and features a slate roof. It is two storeys high and has a rectangular plan, originally consisting of four rooms. Designed in the Tudor revival style, all windows are casements with small panes. The street elevation has a single bay with a three-light window on the first floor and a blind rectangular panel on the ground floor, which was likely intended for a memorial inscription that was either never added or has since been removed. Both the window and panel are set in flat-arched openings with simply chamfered jambs and lintels. The west side has a single-storey entrance porch with a door of original design beneath a four-centred Tudor arch, and there are windows only on the ground floor. The east side features a chimney stack at the rear, while both sides are unfenestrated on the first floor. No. 1 is the westernmost of the range of almshouses.
