Description

No. 52 Brushfield Street is a town house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It dates from the early 18th century and underwent alterations in 1784-1785 and again around 1900. The original 18th-century brick walls are encased in Flemish bond brick from the early 20th century, and the building features a plain tile gambrel roof. It stands three storeys tall with an attic, displaying a three-window range to Brushfield Street and a two-window range to Crispin Street. The ground floor shop fronts are supported by blue brick piers, and there is a mid-19th-century four-panelled beaded door with an overlight on Crispin Street. The windows include cambered arches above early 20th-century plate-glass sashes and 18th-century sashes that have had their glazing bars removed. Inside, there is a late 18th-century dog-leg staircase with stick balusters set on a closed string. The first-floor room facing Crispin Street features early 18th-century moulded and fielded panelling, complete with a moulded dado rail and cornice. The second-floor room has early 18th-century straight-cut panelling with a moulded cornice, and the building retains a common-rafter roof from the 18th century.
