Description
41 Artillery Lane is a house and shop that underwent remodelling around 1800, originally built in the mid 18th century. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick with red rubbed heads on the first floor, and it has three storeys and an attic, featuring five bays. The central and right-hand bays have blind recessed panels on the main front. The windows are sashes with glazing bars. There is a central doorway with an arched head and panelled reveals, leading to a six-panel door with raised and fielded panels and a radiating fanlight. To the right of the doorway on the ground floor is a shop front with a fascia supported by brackets. The building has a single bay corner elevation and four additional bays, two of which are blind, facing Gun Street.
Inside, the layout of the rooms surrounds a central air-well, likely dating from around 1800, along with a staircase featuring plain turned balusters from the same period. The interior retains plain mid 18th century panelling, particularly notable in the ground floor shop rooms. Other original features from around 1800 include fireplaces, iron grates, dadoes, cornices, doors, cupboards, and floorboards, making it a remarkably complete example of this type of house.
