Description
This is a mid-19th century and later terrace of shops and houses, situated on the north side of Bethnal Green Road in London, with The Well and Bucket Public House at its centre. The buildings are constructed of stock brick with a stucco eaves cornice, band, and blocking course. There is a band at the level of the second-floor window sills. Nos. 129 to 141 (odd) have slate mansard roofs with dormers, while No. 143 (the Public House) features a slate mansard roof with three round-headed dormers.
The façade of the Public House is stuccoed and enriched, featuring a bracketed eaves cornice and quoins. The terrace is three storeys high, with two windows on each level. The windows are unbarred sashes, all with moulded stucco architraves, with labels above the second-floor windows and pediments above the first-floor windows. The ground floor has contemporary shop fronts, characterised by architraves, cornices, pilasters with end stops and ball finials (some of which are missing). The Public House has unusual curved glazing bars to its windows. Inside The Well and Bucket Public House, the walls are covered with ceramic murals depicting 19th-century scenes.
Nos. 123 to 159 (odd) are designated as a group.
