Description

The Commercial Public House is a building dating from around 1865, located on Commercial Street at an important corner site with Wheler Street. It is constructed of white brick with painted stucco dressings, and while the roof is not visible, the building stands three storeys high. It features a panelled frieze with a bracketed cornice and a blocking course that rises over a name sign with finials.

The design includes five corner windows and two end bays, with paired windows on the top floor and triple windows on the first floor. Rusticated pilasters frame the end bays. The top floor windows are adorned with architraves and bracketed labels and sills, while the first floor windows are round arched with enriched stucco arches and architraves, featuring masks in medallion keystones. Enriched impost bands with lions' heads are also present. The pub front showcases Corinthian pilasters, and there is stucco and cast iron cresting above.

The Commercial Public House, along with Nos 144 to 146, forms a group with the former Police Station located opposite.
