Description
The Grapes Public House is a public house located on Borough High Street in Southwark. It was built in the mid-19th century, with an early 18th-century wing at the rear. The building is constructed of brick with stucco dressings, and its roof is obscured.
The street elevation features multi-coloured stock brick and stucco dressings, with a four-storey, two-bay facade. On the ground floor, there is a replicated bow window to the left, with small panes above a panelled dado, and a passageway to the right. Granite pilasters support a fascia with heavy moulded brackets and a dentil cornice. There is a single-storey extension to the left that includes a window and an entrance.
On the first floor, there are a pair of sash windows with stucco architraves and console bracketed cornices. The second and third floors have sash windows with segmental, gauged-brick arches, and the building features stucco quoins.
At the rear, in the yard, there is an attached range from the 18th century that has been altered. This section is made of red brick and has a steeply pitched tile roof with a deep eaves cornice. It has plain brick storey bands and is three storeys high with five bays. The ground floor has a fascia board that partly obscures the brick band at the first floor and rests on flat pilasters. There is an engraved glass window, and the first-floor sash windows have glazing bars in near flush box frames, set under segmental brick arches. Two of the right-hand windows have been later extended below their sills. The central opening has been partly blocked, with a small window inserted. The second floor features four similar windows, with a central blind panel that is slightly recessed. A wrought-iron lampholder is located over the door. The interior has not been inspected.
