Description

A terrace of 18 houses, built between 1793 and 1794, by Searles. The houses are constructed of yellow brick with some stucco dressings, and have a coped parapet. The roof is slate, with a mansard and dormers on numbers 20 and 44-48. The houses are three storeys high, with basements, and are three bays wide each, except for the slightly projecting numbers 44 and 48, which are two bays wide. Numbers 44 and 48 flank a projecting centrepiece (number 46) of five bays, featuring a mutule cornice and a pediment with a stucco fan in the tympanum. The front doors are round-headed and set in round-arched recesses, which have stucco imposts and decorative fanlights (although number 22 has a different door). Numbers 26, 28, 32, 34, and 38 have had their doors replaced with windows. Numbers 30-34 and 44-48 have round-headed ground-floor windows in round-arched recesses with a stucco springing band. Number 46 has a first-floor sill band and stucco architraves to the first- and second-floor centre windows; the first-floor window’s architrave has a console bracketed pediment. All other windows have gauged, flat brick arches and are sash windows, mostly with glazing bars. A plaque on number 42 commemorates Samuel Palmer, the artist, who was born there. The interior of the houses was not inspected. Wrought-iron handrails and area railings extend along the street frontage, with an overthrow to numbers 42 and 50. The terrace forms part of a larger raised terrace also built by Searles.
