Description

The former fire station, built between 1903 and 1904 by the London County Council Architects' Department, is located on the south side of Old Kent Road in Southwark. The building is constructed of red brick with Portland Stone dressings and features a slate mansard roof with dormers. It has an L-shaped plan and stands four storeys high with an attic.

The exterior consists of six bays, with the outer bays framed by pilasters and quoin strips, featuring alternate stone blocks that rise to a simple blocked entablature and a dentilled cornice, which has been partially removed. The ground floor is prominently elevated with stone ashlar and includes four- and five-light stone mullioned and transomed windows to the left of the double entries for fire engines, which are currently blocked up. Above this, there is a moulded cornice leading to a sunk parapet that is topped with iron railings.

The building has flat-roofed dormers and stacks flanking double-gabled central dormers, which have a banded brick and stone facade and four keyed segmental-arched 12-pane sash windows. All windows are 12-pane sashes with segmental brick arches, except for those on the third floor, which have flat arches. The left-hand return to Shorncliffe Road mirrors the six-bay design and includes similar mullioned and transomed windows, along with a triple-keyed segmental-arched blocked architrave for the doorway. The canted end bay is also framed by pilasters and quoin strips, with a similar cornice and flat-roofed dormer.

At the rear, there is a narrow tower featuring segmental-arched openings and a stone ashlar upper stage topped with an open pediment. The interior has not been inspected.
