Description
The Lord Nelson Public House is an early 19th-century public house located on Trafalgar Avenue in Southwark, with later alterations. It is built of yellow brick and features a stucco parapet and dressings. The building stands three storeys tall and has three bays, with a projecting extension to the left that is two storeys high and has two bays. The later 19th-century ground floor projects and curves to the right, featuring a splayed corner entrance and an additional three bays to the left. The ground floor is articulated by fluted modified Ionic pilasters, topped with a dentil cornice above the fascia board, and includes cast-iron railings on the balcony above. The central bay on the first and second floors has a wide bow with tripartite windows. The sash windows, which have vertical glazing bars, are adorned with stucco architraves; those on the first floor feature entablatures, while those on the second floor have bracketed sills. Similar architectural details are found on the two-bay return facing Old Kent Road, which has segmental-headed windows.
Inside, the pub boasts elaborately carved timber bar fittings. The Lord Nelson Public House, along with Nos 16-64 (even) Trafalgar Avenue, forms a group of buildings of collective significance.
