Description
English Martyrs Primary School is a school built between 1904 and 1905, designed by Leonard Stokes. It is constructed of yellow brick with random blue headers and features red brick window dressings. The roof, which has been replaced, is slate and includes a small fleche.
The south elevation consists of three storeys with five main windows, each pair of outer windows topped by a gable. To the right, there is a two-storey extension with one window. The entrance is located on the west elevation facing Flint Street, which has three main bays beneath a broad gable. The central bay features wider bipartite windows, with the second-floor window having a semicircular radially glazed head.
On the south elevation, there are gauged red brick arches above multi-pane sash windows that have glazing bars and overlights. The ground-floor windows have flat arches, while the upper floor windows have segmental arches. The left side of the building is blank, but there are additional windows on the first and ground floors to the right. Flat buttresses rise from the walls at the second-floor level, positioned outside and between all five main window bays.
The interior has not been inspected. The school faces the Church of the English Martyrs across the former Northampton Place, which is now a playground.
