Description

Carlton Cottages is a pair of semi-detached houses built in 1829. They are made of stucco and feature a hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves and a central chimney stack. The houses are two storeys high with a basement, each having two bays. The outer entrance bay is slightly lower and set back, topped with a separately hipped roof. There are steps leading up to square-headed doorways with plain reveals, although the original trellised wooden porches are no longer present.

The central section of the cottages is highlighted by three tall fluted pilasters that flank the windows and extend through both floors. These pilasters have ammonite capitals, a design element that was popularized by Amon Wilds in Brighton and is now quite rare in London. They support segmental arches over the first-floor windows. The windows themselves are square-headed with plain reveals, and those in the central section include margin lights. The ground-floor windows are tall casements with console bracketed cornices, while the first-floor windows are sashes with glazing bars.

The interior has not been inspected. Carlton Cottages were originally part of a row that included three pairs of similar houses, and they may have been built by the same builder as Nos 864 and 866 Old Kent Road. Nos 6 and 8 Carlton Cottages, along with Nos 10 and 12, form a cohesive group.
