Description

This is a late 19th-century vicarage, dated 1867, designed by Charles Barry Junior. It was built as the residence associated with the Church of St Stephen on College Road. The building is constructed of coursed stone with Bath stone dressings, and has a slate roof with decorative bargeboards to the gables, and clustered stone stacks. It is of Gothic style.

The exterior has two to three storeys and irregular window placement. The front elevation features a central gable with pierced bargeboards and a finial, and a gabled porch with bargeboards and brackets. The windows have pointed arches and vine or floral decoration. A moulded stone plinth runs around the base, with stone strings between the floors, incorporating rosettes at intervals. The garden front includes a large gable with a pointed-arched window, a French window with sidelights, and a three-storey canted bay with a hexagonal turret topped with an iron finial, as well as a two-storey canted bay. The left return shows two gables; the right one includes the date “AD 1867” set between a mullioned and transomed window above and a doorcase below. The larger left gable has a window in a similar style, with the crest of Alleyn's foundation displayed beneath. A French window is found on the ground floor.

Inside, original features remain, including a staircase with turned balusters and six-panelled doors with chamfered architraves featuring a trefoil motif above paterae. At the time of survey, some windows were boarded up.
