Description

Number 4 is a house built in 1868, designed by Charles Barry, with plans for conversion to flats dated 1939 by HWC Reynecke van Stuwe, in association with Scott, Shepherd and Breakwell, although these plans do not appear to have been carried out. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a mansard roof covered with slate, showcasing the French Second Empire style. It has a roughly square layout.

The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic over a basement, with a three-window range. In the right corner, there are steps leading up to a flat-arched entrance with an overlight, framed by an aedicule with Tuscan pilasters and an entablature. To the left of the entrance, there are two flat-arched ground-floor windows, each with a projecting sill and a cast-iron balconette. The first-floor windows are segmental-arched, featuring keyed lintels and eared architraves, with a sill band running beneath them. The entablature, which has a mutule cornice, extends to the top storey. The building also includes three flat-arched dormers and original 2x2 sash windows. On the right return, there is a full-height bay that houses the staircase, with a projecting chimney breast on the left return. The first-floor windows on the return match those on the main elevation, and other features from the main elevation are repeated here. The chimneystacks have cornices and capstones typical of Barry's work.

The interior has not been inspected. The property is complemented by a perimeter wall made from brick in Flemish bond with stone copings, featuring outer piers of random masonry and inner piers of brick, along with spearheaded railings and gates. Number 4 forms a pair with Number 2, which has an identical design.
