Description
This is a house, built in 1868 by Israel Bacon, with John Perry acting as the builder. Constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, it features a slate mansard roof and is designed in the French Second Empire style. The house is roughly square in plan, with two storeys and an attic over a basement.
The front elevation has a three-window range. The left side has steps leading to a flat-arched entrance within a decorative surround of Tuscan pilasters and an entablature. A similar decorative surround features on a pair of ground-floor windows to the right, each with a projecting sill and a cast-iron balcony. A sill band runs along the first-floor windows, which are segmental-arched and have keyed lintels and projecting architraves. An entablature with a mutule cornice extends across the top storey. There are three flat-arched dormers of original design in the roof. The windows are 2x2 sashes, also original. A full-height bay on the right side houses the staircase; a projecting chimney breast is on the left return. First-floor windows on the return side mirror those on the main elevation, along with other features from the main facade. Stacks with cornices and capstones are present on the returns.
The interior was not inspected during the listing process.
Remaining features include the remnants of a cast-iron porch to the entrance and railings to the entrance walls. The building forms a group with number 4 Crescent Wood Road, which is of identical design.
