Description

Six Pillars is a house dating from 1935, designed by Harding and Tecton. The house is constructed of stock brick and concrete. It’s named for the six cylindrical piers that support an overhanging first floor and divide the ground floor into five bays of unequal size. A central, cylindrical brick stair shaft rises through the building, providing access to a roof terrace and visible through a balconied space in the tall concrete parapet. Concrete is also used for the first floor and the canted, recessed ground-floor right bays, which contain an angled front door and a shaped, tapered seat. The first floor features a continuous strip of top glazing, while the left section of the ground floor has more conventional windows of varying sizes. A brick garage extension is present on the left side. The interior is austere, with details deliberately understated. The stairwell is illuminated by a large, two-storey rear window.
