Description
Kingswood House is a large villa built in 1892, now serving as a library and community centre. It was designed by H.V. Lanchester for L.J. Johnstone, the founder of Bovril, and includes parts of an 18th-century house that are not visible from the outside. The building features coursed stone with ashlar dressings and a red tile roof.
The exterior showcases a Victorian Tudor style with a rambling baronial appearance, including crow-stepped gables, a battlemented parapet, half hexagonal angle towers, tall jointed chimney stacks, and a tower with a lookout post. The structure has two main storeys and irregular bays. A crow-stepped porch leads to a door set beneath a four-centred arch, and there is an oriel window on the first floor to the right of the entrance. The other windows feature mullions, some with transoms, while the ground-floor left bay window displays delicate Renaissance-style panels. The rear of the building has a terrace and extensions added in the early 20th century in a Neoclassical Revival style, with the eastern extension being domed.
Inside, the tall great hall, which is now the library, has a gallery above an inglenook fireplace. There are also other panelled rooms, including one with an 18th-century fireplace in the main front room. The upper floor is divided into two levels by an east-west corridor. The villa was constructed for L.J. Johnstone at a cost of £20,000.
