Description
The "Sungazer" sculpture at Kingsdale School is a bronze artwork created in 1959 by William Turnbull, commissioned by the London County Council. It measures approximately five feet in length and is mounted on a low plinth. The sculpture's shape was cast from plaster that had corrugated paper pressed into it, resulting in an abstract representation of an eye with a fish-like quality. The form is long, narrow, and torpedo-shaped. In the late 1950s, blindness became a recurring theme in Turnbull's work, and the fish-like aspect connects to his earlier creations. The sculpture's placement on a narrow plinth is significant, as it relates to Turnbull's later totemic pieces. This work is notable as it is the only publicly sited piece by Turnbull and is regarded as a particularly successful and thought-provoking artwork.
