Description

This is a warehouse dating to around 1874, designed by R C Pope. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a stuccoed side elevation. The roof is hidden behind a stone parapet. The building is two storeys high, with two windows on the ground floor. The parapet features a wide stone eaves cornice with brackets and large, stylized acroteria in the centre and on either side. A brick dogtooth cornice sits immediately below. The ground floor has a commercial shop front with four brick piers. This fronts two doorways, each with double-panelled doors and rectangular fanlights above. The left-hand shop front incorporates four mullioned and transomed fixed lights with engraved glass and stylized anthemion motifs. Another brick dogtooth band is visible at first floor level. The first floor has a series of seven round-headed blank arches, defined by impost blocks and three aprons beneath. Internally, the warehouse is divided into rooms with wooden panelling. It possesses group value as a probable part of a group of premises for hop factors located opposite the Hop Exchange of 1866. Documents dated 22 July 1874 refer to this building.
