Description

1 Grote’s Buildings is a mid-18th century house of three storeys and a sunken basement, originally with four windows, although the right-hand bay is wider. The building is constructed of brownish-red brick with a stone-coped parapet concealing the roof. The sash windows have glazing bars and are set within flush box frames with gauged flat brick arches above. An early 19th century doorway is topped by a segmental gauged brick arch, and features a six-panel door with side pilasters having fluted capitals, a cornice head, and a patterned radial fanlight. A two-storey, basement extension of two windows was added in the early 19th century to the right-hand side. The building forms a group with Nos 1 to 6 (consec) and associated walls.
