Description

These are three buildings, numbered 3, 4, and 5 Grote’s Buildings, dating from the mid-18th century and forming a near-symmetrical group.

Number 4, the central block, is four storeys and has a basement, with four windows. The top storey may be later, sitting above a substantial moulded wooden cornice. Numbers 3 and 5 are two-storey wings with attics and basements, flanking the central block. All have slated mansard roofs, hipped at the ends, and a single square dormer window each. Number 3 has a two-storey, single-window extension to the right, with a parapet that obscures the roofline. Number 5 has a three-storey and attic extension to the left, with a mansard roof that extends over the extension.

The buildings are constructed of multicoloured stock brick, with parapet fronts. Some rebuilding has taken place on the parapet of Number 5. Stone bands are present at the first and second floors of Number 4. The sash windows, which largely have replaced glazing bars, are set within flush, moulded frames and feature gauged, flat red brick arches. Number 3 has a modern glazed door within a reproduction classical doorcase featuring an open pediment. Number 4 has a six-panel door with triple sunk panel pilasters supporting an enriched cornice head, and a handsome wide radial fanlight under a gauged round brick arch. Number 5 has a six-panel door between fluted pilasters with feather capitals, a moulded cornice head that is broken back in the centre, and a patterned radial fanlight under a round gauged brick arch. Fire insurance signs are visible on the first floors of all three houses.

Numbers 1 to 6 (consecutively), and the surrounding walls, form a group.
