Description
Montague House is a mid-18th century building with alterations, located on Dartmouth Hill in Southwark. It is three storeys high and originally had three windows, though the ground floor windows have been replaced. The exterior is red brick with remnants of limewash. A parapet hides the roof, and horizontal bands define the first and second floors. Recessed sash windows are topped with gauged brick arches; the second floor windows are original to the 18th century, while those on the first floor are early 19th century. The central window on the first floor has been narrowed and replaced, with a plaque of uncertain origin bearing the date "1780" positioned below it. A Doric prostyle porch, featuring fluted columns, a triglyph frieze, and mutule cornices, provides access to the building. The porch’s cross-vaulted ceiling is decorated with a central rose and flanked by guilloche bands surrounding a modern door, with two small, modern windows positioned to the right. A two-storey, single-window wing dating to the early 19th century extends to the west, featuring a chimney on the front and a shallow bow on the return. The windows within this wing have been replaced.
