Description

The West Norwood Memorial Park Mausoleum of George Dodd, built around 1865 by Thomas Allom, is a mausoleum constructed from white marble in the Northern Italian Gothic style. It has a rectangular plan with three bays, defined by pinnacled buttresses and clasping buttresses at the corners. The long sides feature crocketed, gabled, pointed arch blind openings with cusped heads supported by colonettes, adorned with ball flower and dog-tooth decoration. These openings are filled with pink marble panels. The gable ends are also crocketed and topped with elaborate cross finials, with one end displaying two similar pointed arch blind openings and a quatrefoil roundel above. The mausoleum has a pitched roof covered with fish-scale tiles and cresting, though it is currently in a poor state of repair. Originally, it was surrounded by a low railing. George Dodd served as the Member of Parliament for Maidstone from 1841 to 1853.
