Description
The Magniac Mausoleum, located in St Peter's Churchyard, was built in 1870 and designed by William Burges. This large rectangular memorial is made of stone with inlaid marble decoration, showcasing a free interpretation of the Sicilian Romanesque style. It stands on a beaded plinth with an undulate frieze running both below and above the main panels, topped with an ogee cornice and a flat slab. Each side features a central cartouche with a cherub in three-quarter relief, which supports an ornate scrolled console at each end of the long sides. The mausoleum bears various inscriptions dedicated to members of the Magniac family from Colworth House. It is protected by a possibly later hipped red clay tile roof, which is supported by eight wooden bracketed posts with end braces. The mausoleum is set on a much larger limestone-edged plinth.
