Description
The Parish Church of St Peter, located on Church Lane in Sharnbrook, dates mainly from the 13th to the 15th centuries, with restoration around 1855. The building is constructed of limestone rubble, with some ashlar stonework. It likely has an original Norman nave and chancel, with a three-bay nave that was rebuilt, aisles added, and the chancel extended in the 13th century. The 14th-century extensions include a large northeast chapel and a west tower, along with a one-bay westward extension of the nave. The north and south porches and several windows date from the 15th century. The chancel roof, from the 17th century, consists of three bays. In the north chapel, there is a 14th-century three-stepped sedilia and piscina. The nave features a four-bay 15th-century roof with moulded principals and carved, gilded bosses. The tower has a base with a 15th-century spire and three tiers of lucarnes. Other notable features include a 15th-century octagonal font, a 16th-century screen, and a 17th-century Boteler memorial in the north chapel, as well as the Magniac memorial by William Burges from 1867.
