Description
St Gabriel's College is a large Art Nouveau building completed in 1900, as indicated by the date on the stone tympanum above the first-floor center window. The structure has four storeys with 14 windows, plus a two-bay projecting left wing. A fifth storey has been added, along with a chapel that projects at an obtuse angle to the right, featuring a three-storey octagonal tower in the corner. The building is constructed of red brick in two tones, laid in English bond, with plain parapets. It has a symmetrical arrangement of one, two, and three-storey roughcast canted oriel bays on brackets that rise to frame the central bay, which features a projecting gabled porch adorned with freely-adapted Tudor ornament. While the overall composition has been somewhat affected by later additions, it remains an interesting example of its style.
