Description

The Church of St James is a late 19th-century building, constructed between 1869 and 1870 by George Low. It was a gift to the neighbourhood from J L Minet. The church is built of Kentish ragstone rubble with Bath stone dressings, designed in the late 13th century style. It features high-pitched slated roofs. The church comprises a nave with a west portal, north and south aisles, gabled transepts, projecting north and south chapels, a lower apsidal chancel and a north tower with a stone spire. The nave has five bays, and a tall, wide arch leads to the chancel. The aisles and transepts contain good stained glass by Ward and Hughes, depicting apostles and parables. The interior includes an arch braced timber roof, with braces resting on corbels above the arcade arches. The doors feature good ironwork.
