Description

Calais Gate is a large, early 20th-century block of flats situated on Cormont Road. The left-hand section is a symmetrical composition, featuring a five-storey central block with four windows each side of a projecting central bay, topped with an ornamented gable. Flanking this are two- and four-window inner sections with tall windows, leading to projecting six-window end sections, grouped three and three, and finished with crow-stepped gables. The right-hand block utilizes similar elements but is a rearrangement of the design, with shortened inner sections and no left-hand projection, connected to the left block behind. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings, including copings to gable ends and chimneys arranged in longitudinal walls upon steeply pitched tiled roofs, the central section being hipped. Stone dressings are also found around the windows in the centre section and around the projecting entrances in the staircase walls; these entrances are reached via stone porches, with a central entrance beneath a four-centred arch.
