Description
Block 9 of St Thomas's Hospital Medical School, built around 1870 by Henry Currey, is an Italianate two-storey building with a later raised attic. The main west front features a projecting six-bay north wing and a six-bay main block that is wider, culminating in a tower at the south end. The building is constructed of red brick with Portland stone used for the quoins, band, window dressings, and balustraded parapet. The first floor of the left wing has round-headed windows set in moulded architraves. The main block contains paired round-headed windows within a larger round arch, with light in the spandrel. The tower consists of one tall stage with deep windows set in sunk panels. It has a stone architrave with keystones that rise to a cornice, supported by long brackets that hold a projecting cast iron balcony. Above, the stone stage features a hipped lead roof topped with a balustraded turret.
