Description

Lambeth Palace is a group of ecclesiastical, ceremonial, defensive, and residential buildings from various periods. At the north-west corner is the Water or Lollards' Tower, built in 1435 from Kentish ragstone with ashlar quoins and a brick turret. To the south is the 17th-century Land's Tower, constructed from similar materials, including some flint. East of this is the 13th-century chapel made of Reigate stone with Purbeck dressings, along with its earlier 15th-century crypt that retains some original plaster. The residential apartments, built around 1835, are designed in a collegiate gothic style. South-west of these is the guardroom, which is a circa 1835 rebuilding of a 14th-century structure that preserves much of the original woodwork in the roof. To the west is the courtyard, and south of the courtyard is the Great Hall, now a library, built between 1660 and 1663. This building features mixed styles, with baroque elevations of red brick and Portland stone framing late-gothic windows, and a hammer beam roof decorated entirely in classical style. To the south-west is Morton's Gatehouse and tower, dating from around 1490, made of red brick with blue diapering and stone dressings. The interior includes fine woodwork, including a panelled room adorned with 17th-century wall paintings.
