Description

The statue of Robert Clayton is located at the north entrance to the ward block of the North Wing at St Thomas' Hospital. Dated 1714, the statue features a Latin inscription on the plinth, which translates to describe Clayton as the President and benefactor of the hospital. The marble figure depicts him in legal robes and a full wig, holding a scroll. The plinth is adorned with cherubs. This statue was moved to its current location from the old hospital in Southwark around 1870. It was sculpted by Grinling Gibbons.
