Description

The River Wall with 36 lamp standards, located on the west side of Albert Embankment in SE1, is a Grade II listed structure. This grey granite wall features a plinth and square coping, which is elevated by a later granite course. At regular intervals along the wall, there are lamp standards made of cast iron. These standards are designed with interlinked dolphins wrapping around a fluted, wreathed column that supports a globular lampholder topped with a crown finial. Each lamp standard stands on a tall granite plinth adorned with marine trophies. The bases of the plinths are inscribed alternately with '1870' and 'VIC REG', and they also bear a faint inscription reading 'MASEFIELD & CO FOUNDER, C VULLIAMY, ARCHT'. Most of the plinths feature a bronze lion head with a ring in its mouth on the river-facing side.
