Description

The River Wall with 28 lamp standards, located on the west side of Albert Embankment, dates from 1870. It is constructed of grey granite and features a plinth with square coping that has been heightened by a later granite course. At regular intervals along the wall, there are lamp standards made of cast iron, designed as interlinked dolphins wrapping around a fluted, wreathed column topped with a globular lampholder and a crown finial. These lamp standards rest on tall granite plinths that display marine trophies. The bases of the plinths are inscribed alternately with '1870' and 'VIC BEG', and also faintly with 'MASEFIELD & CO FOUNDER, C VULLIAMY, ARCHT'. Most of the plinths feature a bronze lion head with a ring in its mouth on the river-facing side.
