Description
The kiosk is a K6 type telephone kiosk dating from a standard design. It is located on the pavement to the south-east of the gates, railings, and piers of Tate Britain, and has a strong visual relationship with Tate Britain itself, along with the statue of Sir James Robert McGrigor, the Royal Medical Corps Officers Mess and Commandant’s House, all of which are listed buildings.
The kiosk is constructed of cast iron and is painted red overall, featuring long horizontal glazing within the door and sides. The crowns on the top panels are applied rather than perforated. It retains original rectangular white display signs that read TELEPHONE beneath the shallow curved roof. The interior contains operational 21st-century telephone equipment, and all the original glass remains intact.
Note: Certain features are excluded from the definition of special architectural or historic interest for the purpose of planning legislation.
