Description

The South Bank Lion is located at the east end of Westminster Bridge on the north side of Westminster Bridge Road. This structure features a tall granite plinth with curved ends, which is inscribed on the west end with the words 'The South Bank Lion'. Above the plinth stands a Coade Stone lion of heroic size, displaying a notable expression. A bronze plaque on the east face of the plinth notes that the lion originally stood from 1837 on the parapet above the riverfront of the Lion Brewery in Lambeth. It was relocated to its current position after World War II at the request of King George VI. The lion was modeled by W. F. Woodington in 1837.
