Description

The Former Annie McCall Hospital is a three-storey building with a basement, constructed of red brick with stone dressings and concrete floors. At the rear, it features stock brick with render. The windows are either timber sashes or horizontal hinged casements, and the flat roof is covered in asphalt. The north-west front showcases windows adorned with rubbed brick arches, stone keystones, and stone aprons. The central bay is highlighted by brick and stone banded pilasters, a pediment with a stone dentil cornice, and a stuccoed projecting ground floor that includes a vase balustrade on its parapet. The entrance portico is notable for its rusticated piers, Ionic half-columns, and a broken pediment that frames a large cartouche, with original timber front doors.

An extension built in 1938-1939 is part single-storey and part three-storey, also made of red brick with rubbed brick and stone dressings. The south-east elevation is more utilitarian, clad in render with rows of undecorated windows and canted bays at each end.

The building has a long and shallow plan, featuring a spinal corridor on each floor. Along the south-eastern side, there are five small wards, while the north-western side contains a single ward, WCs, and utility rooms. Internal windows allow light from the wards into the corridor. The ward floors are made of woodblock or timber planks, while the corridor floors are terrazzo, which rises to form a skirting along the walls for easy cleaning. The entrance lobby features a mosaic terrazzo floor, and there is a cantilevering open-well concrete staircase with a metal balustrade and timber handrail. One fireplace remains in one of the ground floor rooms.

Nos 37 and 39 Jeffreys Road are typical mid-19th century London semi-detached townhouses and are not included in the listing.
