Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist, built in 1842 by C C Nelson, is a rectangular classical church with one tall storey. It features a hexastyle Ionic portico and a pediment above an entablature, both decorated with egg and dart moulding. There are three entrances, with the central one being particularly tall and set in a moulded architrave that has a paterae border and a cornice supported by console brackets. The entablature extends around the five-window returns, which include a cill band and a stone plinth, and the walls are made of greyish brick. At the east end, there are three plain windows set in eared, moulded architraves, along with a vestry extension. An undercroft is located beneath the chancel. This church is historically linked to the evangelical "Clapham Sect," of which William Wilberforce was the most notable member.
